Canada fest focuses on Iran female director

Canada-based filmfest is set to focus on short flicks made by notable Iranian female director Ghasideh Golmakani.

The 28th edition of Regard International Short Film Festival in Canadian city of Saguenay will showcase a lineup of Golmakani’s short films on March 16, including ‘Horn’, ‘Limbo’ and ‘Online Shopping’.

“Donia, a young girl, wants to immigrate to continue her studies abroad. Before leaving Iran, she tries to sell her belongings online. One of the customer is a man who enters in her house and behaves strangely,” the Online Shipping’ synopsis published by Regard fest reads.

 ‘Horn’ tells the story of an Iranian lady who tries to find a way to get rid of harassment on street.

“A former Iraqi sniper took refuge in Iran and began to tattoo the names of all the soldiers he has killed in the conflicts and wars in Iraq. The last name is tattooed by a young Iranian, who is asked for a strange favor…”, the fest wrote about ‘Limbo’.

The director also introduced Iranian award-winning short flick ‘Animal’ by Bahman and Bahram Ark to the fest for screening at this section of the event. ‘Animal’ narrates the story of a man who wants to pass the border, disguising himself as a ram.

Ghasideh Golmakani was born in Tehran (Iran), into a family of journalists and artists. She studied in Paris in History of Art and Cultural Studies at the Sorbonne. She directs films in which she tries to show social issues of Iranian society.

A discussion hosted by film critic Manon Dumais will follow the March 16 screening with the whole fest set to run March 14–18, 2018.
